Vegy Budget & No Contingency Fund

Vegy Budget & No Contingency Fund

Posted on 03. Apr, 2007 by in How To Grow Veg, Veg Plot

I have decided to publish the costs of my Master Vegetable Plot Plan so that if anyone else out there in cyberspace wants to set up their very own vegetable plot and has no idea how much it is going to cost, at least this will give you some idea.

As this is my first vegetable plot I know I may go a little overboard to norish, cherish and protect my plants so this is where I get all ‘grand designs’ and completely blow budget as I don’t allow for extras and it ends up costing more than I expected! But we shall see…

Budget: £200
For the whole plot – the three 5 x 4 foot raised beds. This covers timber, soil, manure, seeds, netting, tools, trellis, twine etc.

Contingency Fund: None.
The only thing I found out the cost of was the timber as I knew this would be the most money, although I forgot to add on the stakes. Everything else I am hoping doesn’t go over my budget.

Month to be Completed: A.S.A.P in April 2007

So Money spent so far….

My husband has built me a raised bed for nothing, with wood he was given by our neighbour and we are going to fill it with Top soil from my friends farm.Seeds have cost very little from local 99p store. We have bought a cloche, might get a couple more, also from 99p store.I estimate my vegetable plot (Consisting of pots,1 Raised bed at the moment, hoping for more though, hanging baskets and all equiptment, seeds, tools etc) will cost between 50-100 pounds.

    Hi Nicola,

There are a lot more ways to find old wood to make raised beds with the likes of Freecycle, SalvoWeb and there are various community wood recycling organisations where they can construct the raised beds out of recycled wood for you. And of course there’s always ebay.

As you have said the 99p store and Wilko’s are low cost seed shops which can considerably lower the cost of setting up your own vegetable plot. There are also cheaper vegetable seeds online like Alan Roman’s from 80p and Packet Seeds from 95p.

    Thanks
    Tracey
