Week 29 – 27.10.07 – Winter Warmers

Posted on 27. Oct, 2007 by Tracey in My Veg Plot

Today I will mostly be wrapping up my veggy plot and potato tubs in horticultural fleece. With the windy weather this was not the most easiest of jobs. Once I finally got the fleece down over the plot and pegged it down with large rocks, I realised I would need a way of removing it in the mornings without it blowing away from me.

Top Tip- When removing your fleece from the plot or raised bed in the mornings, remove the rocks/pegs and use a length of bamboo cane to roll the fleece up onto the cane so that you can store this at the side of the plot or upright in a shed if removing completely. It is then easy to re-lay over your plot before nightfall.

Updates on Plot

  • Cabbage caterpillars have gone and my cabbages have put on a spurt of growth for winter.
  • Whitefly have moved from my cabbages onto my turnip leaves which I’m not worrying about as the turnips will be picked as and when I need them.
  • All sweet baby peppers have been picked and eaten. They were lovely. I will definately be growing some better and bigger varieties next year.
  • I’m still waiting for my broad beans and pea seeds to come through the post.

Frost bitten Potatoes in pots

My poor potatoes in buckets on the decking have been frost bitten. I completely forgot to cover them over with fleece this past week. I have now covered them with fleece for nights and fingers crossed they will be ok now.
