8 Reasons to Start Growing Vegetables Now!
Posted on 09. May, 2009 by Tracey in How to Grow Veg
1. May is the best month to start sowing seeds.
Spring has arrived and settled in, the weather is warmer and there will be no frosty nights until October. Your seedlings will get growing in no time.
2. Easy To Grow Vegetables can be sown now.
- Try growing radishes which are ready to eat in 4 weeks,
- Cut and Grow Again Lettuce Leaf which are ready to eat in 5-7 weeks,
- Dwarf and Runner Beans.
3. The recession is still upon us and supermarket prices are on the rise.
Beat the recession and grow your own vegetables at home. Start sowing seeds in trays, window boxes, pots or build your own raised vegetable garden.
4. Reduces your carbon footprint and is economical.
Save money on fuel. Instead of traveling to the supermarket, just step into your back garden and pick your own vegetables. They taste so much better freshly picked.
5. Fresh Air and Exercise.
Being out in the fresh air keeps depression at bay and reduces stress levels. It also improves your general well being. Gardening burns approximately 236 calories an hour.
6. Social Interactivity
Chatting about your experiences online, at work, over the garden fence, at the post office and of course if you’ve grown to much (usually runner beans for me) giving it to your nearest and dearest or your co-workers. You could even encourage your friends to start growing their own vegetables.
7. Sense of Achievement.
There’s nothing like the feeling of your first seedling raising its head above the soil. You’ll know what I mean, once it happens. Growing vegetables can get quite addictive, wanting to grow different types and colours. Soon you’ll be wanting to take over the whole garden with your veggies!
8. Get your family and children involved in growing vegetables.
Spend some valuable time together in the garden, showing your children where vegetables come from and how they grow or share your adventures with others, it is very fulfilling.

You have inspired me to go out and till up the soil. I just moved into a new house and the “garden area” is weeds. I’ll have to go work it a bit and get some food going.

What are some other veggies besides radishes and beans that would be good to grow in May? Or dishes to make radishes and beans be more appealing? lol I hate to admit but I’m a picky eater. I never eat beans or potatoes.

Oh yum! Yes, I saw the post (I subscribe to your newsletter): love onions, carrots, and peas. Squash would grow well where I live no frost in FL lol
