Grow Your Own Vegetables Windowsill Challenge
Posted on 03. Jun, 2009 by Tracey in How To Grow Veg
Today I am launching the Grow Your Own Vegetables on a Windowsill Challenge to myself and anyone else who wants to take part!
I’m a firm believer that vegetables can be grown in small spaces even on a windowsill. The smallest space I have grown is containers outdoors and started a few tomato seedlings off on a windowsill. I have never actually tried growing radishes, lettuce and baby carrots from seed to harvest on a windowsill until now.
If you haven’t tried growing any vegetables yet or have never tried growing veg on a windowsill, this is your chance to join in the great Grow Your Own Veg Windowsill Challenge!
This is the easiest, cheapest, most hassle free way of growing lettuce, radish and carrots.
Most importantly you will need a warm light or sunny windowsill.
What do you Need to get Started?
- Stewarts Budget Propagator £2.79 or a Windowsill Propagator (try Poundstretchers or Aldi),
- Seed Tray, 3 for 99p
- Seed and Cuttings or Multi-Purpose Compost 79p
- 20cm Pots x 2 £1.99
- 18 – 20cm pot saucers £1.38
Seeds Shopping List:
- Carrot – Amsterdam 2 – Patio Veg Range £1 (Wilkinsons 800 seeds goes along way)
- Carters Mixed Leaf Salad Seeds (Poundstretchers 80p) or any Salad Loose Leaf Mix.
- Carters Radish – Scarlet Globe Seeds (Poundstretchers 80p) (100 seeds goes along way)
Total £10.54 (Wilkinsons and Poundstretchers).
OR
The Make Do List (Credit Crunch Special) – then all you need is the seeds!
- Instead of a Propagator why not use a clean plastic takeaway tray or plastic box?
- Instead of buying pots why not recycle fizzy drinks bottles or plastic milk cartons (cut in half) or wash out a few jam jars.
- If you already have some seeds, even if the packets have been opened, try swapping them with others on websites like Garden Swap Shop.

Its a lovely blog packed with useful ideas to re-use and recycle at home and in the garden.

Hi Tracey,
What a fab experiment. I couldn’t find an update on your site (that doesn’t mean it isn’t there LOL!) How are you getting on, were you successful with anything? Would love some advice on things that could be grown indoors.

I’ve been growing things on window ledges for years!
Started off with plastic pop bottles with the tops cut off, using garden soil and cheap seeds from the local B&Q shop!
Now I am using recycled rectangular plant pots which I found at the local council tip (cost me a couple of quid for 5! – New would have been about 5 Quid for one!) Using a mix of soil and compost (from my wormery – left over food that my worms have been munching on!) and packets of seeds that I have got from the local Freecycle mailing list!
Food tastes so much better when you have grown it yourself! (and so cheaply too!)

I have been growing a few herbs for 3-4 yrs and this year I have expanded. Currently trying out some sprouting seeds – wheatgrass, lentils, radish, bio snacky.
Also have some carrots, lambslettuce, various herbs, spearmint and, land cress. I have some others I will try as well.

Thanks for your article!
I am growing cherry tomatoes and strawberries in hanging baskets, basil, sage, thyme, mint, rosemary, oregano and scallions in pots, and green beans, jalepenos, bell peppers, cubanella peppers, eggplants, chives, and tarragon in window boxes! It is going great so far but this is my first year with window boxes so I’m pretty nervious!
