Radish Harvest and my first Onion!

Radish Harvest and my first Onion!

Posted on 14. Jun, 2009 by in My Veg Plot

My Radishes are coming thick and fast now for harvesting, its been a good year for them. I chose a different variety this time – Scarlet Globe.

The taste is nice and then the strong hot after-taste kicks you in the back of the throat. If you are not expecting this (as I wasn’t, I have only grown French Breakfast before which is the mild radish) it can come as quite a shock, although I should have guessed with the colour red, there’s an obvious warning right there! Once I got use to the flavor, its ok and adds a crunchy bite to my salads.

Salads are the top use for Radishes but I always get asked what else can I do with them? Here’s a few Radish Recipes:-

Onion Harvest
As its my first time growing overwintering Onions, I had no idea when to harvest them. I decided to get some advice by signing up for the Grow Your Own Magazine’s Grapevine Forum. The consensus was that people started harvesting their onions in May and I should harvest as and when they are ready or I have something else to plant in their place. There was no point hanging about so I went out into the garden and pulled up a small onion and added it to my chicken dinner, it was lovely.

My Leeks – Pandora and Bandit are the next to go in the place of my onions.
I’m also still harvesting my Broad Beans.

I wasn’t sure when to harvest my onions either, so I just waited until the foliage had pretty much died back. Here is my blog post about growing them for the first time: http://lusciouslawns.wordpress.com/2009/02/06/onion-harvest/
I wanted mine to last through storage, and the majority made it through fine, save for the very smallest ones started sprouting in the last few weeks. I will be sowing this year’s onions in the next few weeks (I am in the southern hemisphere), I was very happy with my onion harvest from last year :-)

    Hi Lauren,
You definately have had a good crop of onions, thanks for sharing your blog post. I think I might try and cure some to see whether they last storage or not. If you think 6 months is a long time for onions being in the ground, then you should try growing parsnips, very long time in the ground around 9 months! Nice roasted though.
    Best Wishes
