4 Alternative Vegetables to Grow in August

Why not try sowing a vegetable you have never heard of before? Some of the following crop in as little as six weeks! Go on try sowing something a bit different.
1. Rapini (Broccoli Raab)
Rapini is easy to grow and is similar to broccoli but crops in only 6 weeks. Broccoli Raab is from the cabbage family, it has a slightly spicy taste and the leaves and sprouts can be cooked as broccoli.

Varieties: Cima Di Rapa (40 days to harvest) or San Marzano (60 days to harvest).
2. Lambs Lettuce
Lambs Lettuce is a compact lettuce with tiny round rosettes of leaves and is very cold tolerant. It can be sown in the autumn and winter to be added to salads. It is also known as Corn Salad.

3. Quick Heading Calabrese
Quick Heading Calabrese can extend your calabrese growing season as it crops in 60 days. By sowing in August and September in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, you may be able to get a small crop in Mid March to April. Please bare in mind that it depends on day length and temperatures on whether they heart up or not. However it is worth growing alongside normal calabrese types.

4. Mustard Greens
Mustard Greens have a striking peppery, zesty flavour and can be easily grown. They are too hot to eat raw but when cooked they loose the hotness and become mild and tasty. They are very hardy and mainly pest free.
