And the Best Vegetable Performance Award goes to …. My Carrots

This doesn’t mean my carrots can do acrobatics or amateur dramatics. It means they have been the best vegetable that has been harvested in my plot so far this year. I am judging my carrots on quantity, quality, taste and lack of pests. In all four of the criteria they have performed outstandingly.

I sowed 3 rows of carrots (Chantenay and Nantes 2) on 19th April 2009 next to my onions. Its taken 16 weeks for them to mature into medium sized, fat, bright orange carrots.

I love harvesting carrots because I love the fresh carrot smell when they are plucked from the ground. The mass of green feathery foliage always hides the goodies in the plot, so its really good to get down to the plot level to wade through the harvestmen spiders and green carrot tail feathers.

The best thing is I have so many carrots I will be harvesting them for weeks to come so I’ll be able to make some Easy Carrot Soup again. You are probably thinking soup in summer = mad! Yes I know it was the hottest day of the year on Wednesday, so maybe I’ll freeze the soup instead.

My Geoff Hamilton Cloches have worked wonders this year, my carrots have remained untouched and pest free to grow into a great harvest. If you would like to build your own Geoff Hamilton Cloche, please see my How To Guide to Building a Cloche.
