August Vegetable Plot Review – Whats Bean Happening?

August Vegetable Plot Review – Whats Bean Happening?

Posted on 29. Aug, 2009 by in Veg Plot

I always find that my vegetable plots look a bit bare by the end of August, lots of vegetables having been harvested (a big crop of carrots, dwarf french beans and maincrop potatoes) with only my leeks, more carrots and runner beans left.

I delayed sowing my seeds from the Real Seed Catalogue as I was going on holiday. I did forget I was supposed to sow the Fennel by mid-august so this will be an experiment as to whether it grows or bolts.

Today I sowed:

  • 2 rows of Spring Pointy Cabbage,
  • 1 row of green and 1 row of purple Mustard Greens,
  • and 1 row of Japanese Kale in the Runner Beans Plot.
  • 2 rows of Giant Red Carrots,
  • 1 row of Fennel,
  • 2 rows of Pak Choi (Overwintering Peas and Broad Beans will be sowed here in Nov),
  • and 1 row of Salad Endive in the empty bed that my potatoes were harvested from.
  • Nothing sown in the leeks and carrots bed, ordered autumn planting shallots and onion sets for planting Nov-Dec from Dobies.

Here’s my photo’s of my vegetable plots and vegetable highlights as at 29th August 2009:-

August has been the month for harvesting:-

What have you had a bumper crop of this year?
