What Vegetable Plants Can I Buy?
Vegetable plants can be bought in the form of plug plants in August and September from mail order and online seed companies. Plug plants are seedlings in compost which can be planted straight into your raised beds, allotment or plot. Here’s a few vegetable plug plant collections to look at:
- Autumn Brassicas Collection – Last order date 21st August 2009. (2 x Sprouting Broccoli White & Claret, Cabbage Excel & Spring Hero & Cauliflower) 50 Plug plants 10 of each variety £9.95 from Dobies and Suttons.
- Spring Greens Plant Collection (Calabrese, Cauliflower, Spring Cabbage and Sprouting Broccoli) 20 Plants, 5 of each different variety. £5.95 from Mr Fothergills. (Large quantities are available for bigger plots)
- Stir-fry and Winter Salads Collection (Chinese Cabbage, Mustard Red Giant, Tatsoi and Komatsuna) 20 Plants, 5 of each different variety. £5.95 from Mr Fothergills. (Large quantities are available for bigger plots)
Advantages of Plug Plants
- If you’ve forgotten to sow a vegetable, plug plants are a second chance to plant.
- Plug plants should be healthy so they will be stronger to fight off pests and diseases.
- If you haven’t got enough time to sow seeds, this is a great alternative.
- If the weather turns bad, the plug plants will be settled where seed may suffer on germination.
