Tomatoes – Are Yours Red Yet?
Posted on 10. Aug, 2009 by Tracey in Veg Plan
So you’ve sown the tomato seeds back in February, March or April, nurtured your little seedlings through the potting on process, rescued them from black/green/white fly and killed slugs from miles around, remembered to water the pots (most of the time), rejoiced once the flowers had arrived, not long now you say! The fruit takes it time to form to become big and juicy and green. Then comes the fundamental question from friends, fellow vegetable growers and neighbours:
Are yours red yet? No you answer they’ve been green for bloomin ages!
During the week I asked people on my Twitter feed, have your tomatoes gone red yet?
Here’s my replies:
- wtfork – My San Marzanos are still green – not getting a lot of sun in Toronto this summer
- thegreengal – My tomatoes have been green for ages so I’m glad to read your tweet to know I’m not alone!
- TheAllotmenteer – A bit like (red) buses they all come at once! Mine started to turn a week ago and now I have more than I can eat (not gloating!)
When I asked the question, I wished it wouldn’t be long before my tomatoes turned red, it finally happened 3 days later in fact. Then after my tomato’s had taken their time all these months, for some reason it’s now a rush for them, a competition with my other tomato plants and in spite of me they have all turned red at once! Even from the time I pick them in the morning, my back is turned and by the evening a few more are now red. But I can’t bare to leave them on the plants in case the birds or slugs get them.
Instead of being a joyous occasion for my dinner plate or salad bowl, I’m found with four bowls worth of tomatoes since I last looked and only one person to eat them all! Where did I put those tomato glut recipes I mutter to myself.
The moral of the story is: Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it!
Just one more thing: Have your Tomatoes turned red yet?

Two of my 43 (yes I counted them) have turned red and the rest are staying stubbornly green. Don’t think I’m ready to be careful what I wish for yet!
