Vegetable Seeds have arrived from The Real Seed Catalogue

Whenever I receive vegetable seeds through the post I’m like a kid in a sweet shop. I’m not sure which one to look at first! Even though I know what I ordered I still have to look at all the seed packets and read the information. For about five minutes I’m hypnotized by the delights of the new vegetable seeds!

Its the first time I have ordered from The Real Seed Catalogue, I have always seen their name about in vegetable growing forums but just tarnished them with the same brush, not another seed company type of thing. Until I actually looked on their website and realised they are trying to achieve something different than a normal high street seed company.

The Real Seed Catalogue are providing seeds from a private collection of heirloom, rare and unusual vegetables which are specifically selected for the home or back garden vegetable grower. They are also giving their expertise in the vegetable growing and seed saving fields and assuring customers that their seed is non hybrid and definitely not genetically modified. They are going back to traditional seeds that are truly tasty and ideal for the kitchen gardener.

My seeds arrived within 7 days of ordering online, well packed in a recycled cardboard envelope. The re-sealable seed packets all contain sowing instructions and a description of the variety. The invoice also has instructions for seed saving and cooking which is brilliant considering I have bought some unique vegetables I have never heard of and will definitely want to know how to cook them. I am very impressed by their service and seeds. Prices are very reasonable and are cheaper than the leading seed companies.

Why not have a look on their website, see if anything takes your fancy? The Real Seed Catalogue

So I know what I’ll be doing this weekend! Sow Sow Sow, once I’ve worked out where I can put them of course. I’ve still got a bed full of carrots, leeks, runner beans and maincrop potatoes to harvest.

So you’ll be wondering what I bought that’s got me foaming at the mouth:-

  1. Precoce de Louviers – for the non-french amongst us that’s Pointy Spring Cabbage,
  2. Giant Red Carrot – good vigor and flavour, can’t wait to find out,
  3. Colossale Fennel – less likely to run to seed on mid august sowing,
  4. Green Boy Pak Choi – quick veg ready to eat in 5 weeks – yum!
  5. Green Wave Mustard Greens (Hot) – this is what I will be foaming at the mouth for if I eat it raw! Must remember to steam it first,
  6. Komatsuna Japanese Kale – a cousin of turnip and pak choi, should be interesting,
  7. Osaka Purple Mustard Greens (Hot) – a hot, keep you warm in winter leaved vegetable,
  8. Bianca Riccia da Taglio – or Salad Endive to you and me.

Of course I’ll be recording my progress over the forthcoming weeks of how all this little lot will be growing. Stay tuned to find out if I get to harvest the Pak Choi in 5 weeks and whether the fennel (grown for the first time) will succeed.

There’s plenty of ways to keep track of my vegetable growing:-

Good luck with the seeds: I ordered some parsnips, carrots and marigolds from the Real Seed Co, and they’re all going great guns down the allotment.

    Have fun!

Thanks for the tip Tracey – I’ll check them out.
There’s nothing quite like seed catalogues and little parcels landing on your doormat !
