My Runner Beans have been slow off the starting block

My runner beans were sowed late this year in June to enable me to get a later crop into September. It hasn’t quite worked out the way I wanted it to.

  • Firstly my runner bean seedlings were attacked by slugs who were hiding under the dwarf beans, needless to say the slugs were swiftly destroyed,
  • Then I misjudged my wigwam structure’s size and made it to short. The runner beans raced up the 5 foot bamboo canes into no mans land and were just flailing in the wind, so new 8 foot canes were added,
  • Ok so I may have left them to fend for themselves waterwise during the hottest week whilst I was on holiday – human error, but I did read that runner beans are a forgiving crop,

And I wonder why my runner beans are not growing well!

I have had the flowers but only at the top of the runner bean plants and I can see the runner beans forming, I have had a total of 5 runner beans so far! I’m hoping I’ll get some more before the end of September.

I think my dwarf french beans have won the best performing beans this year.
