Vegetable Seeds to Sow and Sets to Buy in September

September is the month for looking forward to the autumn and winter months and planning overwintering vegetables for your plots.
1. Order Now – Garlic.
Delivery: Mid September to October,
Plant: October to November.
Harvest: July next year.
Garlic Varieties:
- Popular – Solent White – good for the British climate.
- Giant – Elephant Garlic – giant mild tasting variety
- Purple – Purple White – earlier variety lifting in June.
- Hardneck – Sicilian Red – Warm and spicy variety, good for roasting.

2. Order Now – Autumn Onion & Shallot Sets.
Delivery: Mid September to October,
Plant: October to November.
Harvest: July next year.
Autumn Planting Onion & Shallot Sets:
- Radar – popular brown skinned and mild taste.
- Red Cross – Large bulbs that store up to 3 months.
- Senshyu Yellow – Reliable Japanese yellow variety.
- Troy – Good robust onion for autumn planting
- Shallot Griselle – Spicy taste and good stored.
3. Winter Spinach
Hardy spinach varieties stand well in the winter and produce very large leaves just before Christmas.
Sow Seeds: August and September
Harvest: October, November and December
Varieties to choose from:
- Giant Winter – true spinach with good flavor. Stands until January if under a cloche.
- Dominant – dark green leaves with excellent flavour, harvest in 5 weeks
- Bordeaux – A colourful red stem baby leaf variety
4. Green Manures
Green manures are grown to prevent weeds from encroaching on your vegetable plot throughout the year. The plants grow and are cut down in 2 – 4 months time and are dug into the top of the soil. These plants put organic matter and nutrients into the soil so are a natural manure as opposed to using chicken pellets or similar fertilizer.
Green Manures that can be sown in September are:
- Red or Crimson Clover – improves soil structure and nitrogen content. Smothers weeds.
- Mustard White Tilney – helps soil with moisture retention, structure and organic matter.
- Forage Rye – Good for heavy clay soils and suppresses weeds.
- Winter Field Bean – Fixes nitrogen in all soils. Flowers, then dig in the spring.
- Forage Pea – Up to 1 metre tall, fixes nitrogen in the soil for spring. Sow Sept to November.
5. Herbs
Sowing
Its time to sow Coriander, Chervil and Chives in pots on your windowsill or under a cloche in the garden for harvesting during the autumn and winter.
Herb Cuttings
Take cuttings from herbs like Tarragon, Lavender and Rosemary – check out how to do this on the Gardeners World website.
Cutting Back Herbs
Give your herbs a haircut to see them through the winter. Cut back marjoram, tarragon and curry plants.
Dividing Herbs
Divide herbs like sage, thyme, mint, parsley and pot up some for the windowsill to use in the kitchen throughout the autumn and winter.
6. Oriental Vegetables
There are a variety of oriental salad and spicy leaves to grow which are more hardy and quick growing to sow from August to September for an extension of summer salads.
Varieties to Choose from:
- Rubi F1 – striking red top leaves, green underneath.
- Spicy Oriental Leaves including red mustard, rocket and mizuna,
- Chinese Cabbage – Pointed light green leaves, quick growing,
- Spinach Mlkado F1 – oriental spinach which is bolt resistant.

- Radish – winter varieties (10 – 12 weeks)
- Spring Cabbage (for harvest next May)

- Swiss Chard
- Turnip
- Mustard Greens

- Quick heading calabrese (can be sown in greenhouse or unheated polytunnel)
- Endive
