Vegetable Seeds To Sow in October

October is the month for looking forward to the autumn and winter months and planting overwintering vegetables for your plots. Remember to make your own cloche or buy horticultural fleece to protect your winter veg from the frosts.

1. Broad Beans (Overwintering/Autumn Varieties)

Sow: October to November
Harvest: June to July

Broad Bean Overwintering Varieties:

  • The Sutton – A dwarf variety good for smaller and windy plots. Produces a small crop.
  • Luz de Otono – A speedy, cold loving variety with long pods.
  • Aquadulce Claudia – Early maturing with long pods and good crop.

2. Overwintering Peas.

Sow: October to November
Harvest: May to June

Overwintering Pea Varieties:

  • Douce Provence – An organic sweet french variety with a good crop.
  • Little Marvel – An early growing compact variety with a sweet taste.
  • Kelvedon Wonder – A heavy cropping variety with mildew resistence and good to freeze.
  • Early Onward – A hardy fast to mature variety which gives a good crop.
  • Avola – A long podded variety, low growing and tasty crop.

3. Spring Onions

Sow and Harvest: All Year Round. Sow in Autumn or Winter for Spring Harvest.

  • White Lisbon – Quick growing, crisp strong salad onions requires no thinning.
  • Laser – Slim pickings from a tasty quick to mature variety.
  • Winter White Bunching – A good bulb onion that overwinters well.
  • Guardsman – Quick growing, british variety with a mild taste.

4. Winter Cauliflower

Sow: October to November
Harvest: June to July

Varieties to Choose:

  • Snowball – A baby cauliflower, seeds can be sown close together.
  • Avalanche – A sweet, upright, compact plant.
  • All Year Round – Small plants but large heads, harvest July.
