How to Use Organic Fertiliser in Your Vegetable Garden
Posted on 28. Jan, 2010 by Tracey in Grow Veg
There are three types of application of organic fertilizer to your vegetable garden, they are:
1. Dig-In or Rake-In Fertilizer
Apply a quantity per square meter (see pack instructions) and rake or dig into the soil. Check the period of time (below) it takes the nutrients to release into the soil as no seeds can be sown direct to the soil during this period as they may be burned by the fertilizer. The quickest to break down are chicken manure pellets.
Types include:
- Chicken pellets – takes 2 weeks to release nutrients into soil,
- Animal free pellets – takes 2-4 weeks to release nutrients into soil,
- Fish, blood and bone – takes 4 weeks to release nutrients into soil,
- Seaweed Meal – takes 3 months to break down in the soil before sowing,
- Bone Meal – takes up to 6 months to release nutrients
2. Top Dressing Fertilizer
This is adding dry powered fertilizer to the top of the soil around your plants. The fertilizer then seeps into your soil slowly when washed through the soil. Top dressers include blood, fish and bone. Take care not to apply too much, read instructions before applying.
Vegetables that can benefit from top dressing fertilizers are:
- Tomatoes,
- Sweetcorn,
- Peppers,
- Aubergines.
- Nitrogen rich top dressing fertilizers can also be added around brassicas like cabbages to help with green leaf growth.
3. Liquid Feed
This includes Seaweed Extract which can be diluted in water and applied by watering can to the leaves and roots. It helps the nutrient uptake of plants and makes them less susceptible to pests and diseases.
