Its time to make your Veg Pledges for 2010
Posted on 07. Jan, 2010 by Tracey in My Veg Plot
What is a Veg Pledge you may ask, well its like a new years resolution for vegetable growers, its something that you are pledging to all that your are going to complete or achieve (hopefully) in the year 2010.
What will your Veg Pledges be for 2010?
Go on leave a comment at the bottom of this post and let us all know a few things that you want to achieve this year in your vegetable garden, they can be witty or serious.
Tracey’s Veg Pledges 2010 are:
- I will be on a quest to grow at least 1 cabbage this year,
- I will stop growing so many onions and shallots as I am the only one who eats them,
- I will remember to buy nematodes in early April to help the battle against my veg plot enemy – The Slug,
- I will not get carried away looking through seed catalogues and choose lots of vegetables with no physical places to grow them,
- I will try not to convince myself that growing sweetcorn is a good idea because it would be quite fun to see how it grows even if I actually think its one of satan’s vegetables, yuck!
- I will be growing 1 Purple and 1 Yellow Vegetable,
- I will be choosing a mange tout, broad bean or runner bean variety that has beautiful flowers,
- I will sow runner beans in the correct starting month to get a good crop this year,
- I’m on a mission to find at least 1 new seed company that sells different varieties of vegetables to grow,
- I will try not to use expletives when I find caterpillars on my 1 and only cabbage of the year!

I have some fairly ambitious veg pledges for 2010 – I am starting my first real kitchen garden, and I have extremely high hopes.
To help keep me on track, I’ve started a blog to track my progress; http://willitgrowpdx.blogspot.com/
I’m afraid I’m starting with too many things I want to grow, and I’m also probably starting too early, but I’ve already popped a few lettuce and radish seeds seeds into the ground under a cloche. Hopefully I’m not setting myself up for disappointment.

My pledge list
To properly force one clump of rhubarb (this involves getting a bigger tub this year!)
To grow fly free carrots (have already bought the agrimesh)
Try blueberries (awaiting delivery) and raspberries for the first time.
Increase range of brassicas (cauliflower , red cabbage, maybe even kohlrabi? mmm maybe not. Swede anyway)
Grow parsley – lots of it.
Grow coriander for leaf – Now there’s a challenge!
Successfully grow the ‘wild” rocket seed I saved from last year.
To remember to label all pots and not to mix my bean plants up.
To really grow successionally.
Stop Florence fennel bolting – OK I’ve really got carried away
That’ll do.
