January Vegetable Garden Update with Photos
Posted on 06. Feb, 2010 by Tracey in My Veg Plot
Let the Sunshine, let the sunshine, the sun shines on! The first glimpse of spring sunshine, but there’s still a bite in the air and even the snowdrops have popped up to enjoy the view. Its been a while since I’ve checked on my back garden vegetable plots, so I knew there was a little maintenance and weeding to be done.
Apart from a few ‘black’ broad bean stems and the Fennel hasn’t quite made it through the cold snap, all is well. The good news is I still have my one remaining spring cabbage that is still growing, so I’m leaving it in there, to see what happens.
I now have a few spare rows to start planting my new seeds, which I haven’t got round to buying yet! I can’t seem to make up my mind but I’d better hurry up as sowing has begun now its February.
Vegetable Catchup
- Broad Beans – Tall enough to fall over, needed support from twigs and bamboo canes.
- Peas – Looking a big straggly but I have propped them up with sticks to see how they go.
- Leeks – Some are skinny and some are fattening up, may pick a few soon.
- Onions and Shallots – Most bulbs are now showing clusters of green leaves.
- Cabbage – Spring cabbage, needs some TLC and no caterpillars please!
- Carrots – Still skinny baby sized but there will be a bumper crop in May.
- Fennel – Most of the tender plants died in the cold weather, I have saved a few strong ones.
