Potatoes Planted – Better Late Than Never

Potatoes Planted – Better Late Than Never

Posted on 21. May, 2010 by in My Veg Plot

I am a little late with my potatoes, tomatoes and peppers this year. If you’ve got some vegetables that you might have forgotten about, whether it be potato tubers or old seeds or flowers you haven’t potted on yet, its definitely worth planting them and giving them ago.

I’ve been tidying out my mini greenhouse (a yearly ritual) and decided to give away some of my large pots, totally forgetting that I used them to plant potatoes in last year. So I’ve salvaged a couple of pots from the garden and planted the other set of potato tubers in a round tub trug, so all in all its a bit of an experiment.

Colourful Potato Curiosity

After reading Nip It In The Bud’s post about colourful potato flesh, I have been curious to find out more about the purple and red heritage varieties that when cooked retain their bright colours. I also read Daughter of the Soil’s post on red, white and blue heritage potato harvest and took her up on her recommendation to use Alan Romans.com and bought the red variety Highland Burgundy as I can’t wait for the chance to have red mash potato!

AlanRomans.com potato tubers and minitubers are still in stock now and very reasonably priced for heritage varieties. Their delivery was very quick and large tubers were in perfect condition. I also bought some herb seeds starting at a bargain 50p, I just need to find some more pots to plant them in!

Here’s what heritage potatoes I planted on 15th May 2010 in pots:
I was supposed to plant these in pots in March to April so I’m guessing that my potatoes will be delayed by a month or two by now planting in May.

  • Pink Fir – Known for its nutty flavour and elongated knobbly shape.
  • International Kidney – Known for being the Jersey Royal but not grown in Jersey.
  • Highland Burgundy – Red skinned and red flesh potato that retains its colour when cooked.
