Baby Sweet Peppers and Centiflor Tomatoes
Posted on 08. Aug, 2010 by Tracey in Veg Plot
I haven’t really spoken about my peppers this year as I wasn’t sure about them surviving my mini greenhouse experience (see Growing Tomatoes – Is It Really Worth the Effort?). I don’t know why as its been hotter than the Mediterranean this year but they have surpassed my expectations. It is the first time I have planted them in raised beds (uncovered) next to my tomatoes as per a tip I saw on Ali’s Allotment where she had planted them out on her plot.
Now I’ve seen my baby peppers, I can’t wait until I see their true colour comes through which is bright orange. Please view this picture to see what I’m waiting for! Rocks In My Garden – Harvest.
What Variety am I Growing?

Ready to Harvest: September to October.
Baby Centiflor Tomatoes
I’m growing a new type of tomato this year called Centiflor, this type was developed by Dr. Alan Kapular in Oregon, USA. Centiflor literally means up to 100 flowers per truss, the flowers and tomatoes hang in clusters (see photo). They come in red and yellow colours. I’m growing the yellow ones which grow up to 1 inch in size. Varieties names include millifleur, red cluster pear and yellow centiflor.
Where do I Buy Yellow Centiflor Tomato Seeds?
- USA - www.AdaptiveSeeds.com
- UK – www.RealSeeds.co.uk
Harvest in UK: October to January.
Staking Centiflor Tomato Plants
As you can image there is a lot of weight on the trusses but they do hold their own. I am staking them with two bamboo canes, one each side of the stem (so the canes are facing each other with the tomato stem in the middle). This way there’s no chance of the precious stem snapping under the weight of the trusses when they finally reach their maximum weight.
Now its all down to the waiting game for the colours to change on my tomatoes and peppers. Which will turn its colour first? I’m going with tomatoes.
