Sainsbury’s Passion for Purple Potatoes
Posted on 06. Oct, 2010 by Tracey in Veg Plot
Sainsbury’s have turned on the purple passion this month by introducing a potato which has purple flesh called purple majesty. This will join their other range of purple vegetables which over the years include carrots, tomatoes and cauliflower. These potatoes will keep their colour when cooked providing a vivid blue violet mash, boiled or roast potato.
Why Purple?
Purple Potatoes contain the antioxidant called Anthocyanin which has many beneficial effects like its good for your immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties. This plant pigment can also be found in aubergine, blueberries and it is often used as a colouring agent for fruit juices and wines. In the natural world, the anthocyanin pigment colours pansies and petunias.
Grow Your Own Purple Potatoes
Of course the curious vegetable grower amongst us would have already seen or tried growing purple potatoes from various heritage ranges of Potato seed suppliers. If you haven’t, its worth a go. Look for early maincrop potatoes and find out more about how to grow your own potatoes here.

Hi Alison,
The purple majestic variety of potato in my post is from a scotland producer called Albert Bartlett although I’m finding it hard to find any of this variety being sold in the UK as tubers. In America, there a supplier called The Maine Potato Lady who is selling purple majesty.
There are other varieties of coloured potatoes available in the UK, they are:
Ryecroft Purple – purple skins and white flesh,
Salad Blue – blue skin and flesh
Vitelotte – blue flesh and skin
Edzell Blue – blue skinned and white flesh
Congo – blue skin and flesh
Mr Littles Yelthom Gypsy – purple skinned, cream flesh.
Shetland Black – blue skin and blue ring yellow flesh
Edgecote Purple – Purple skins, cream flesh
Highland Burgundy Red – red skinned and flesh
Thanks
Tracey
