Winter Warmer Recipes using Stored Fruit and Vegetables

Posted on 30. Oct, 2010 by in Veg Plot

Now the autumn is rolling in most of our attention will be focused on what yummy warm delights to eat through the winter and how to use up those frozen or newly harvested fruit and vegetables. Here’s a few of my favourite recipes from blogs ans sites I read regularly, I can guarantee it will have you coming back for more!

Fruity

Ginger Plum Crumble from Allotment2Kitchen

A lovely fruity comforting desert adapted from an Anisley Harriot recipe with a rolled oats crumble and using gorgeous in season plums from the garden (or supermarket, grocers or market if you haven’t grown them). The twist is the ginger as it adds a warming feeling when eating.

Blackberries

Blackberries

Autumnal Apple and Blackberry Scones from Allotment2Kitchen

I’ve always got blackberries in the freezer and can never think of anything different to do with them, but I’m definitely trying this recipe this year. I love scones and adding apple and blackberry to them is genius. I can imagine the heavenly smell wafting through the kitchen now!

Baked Apples from Love Food Hate Waste
I love baked apples, these are the total winter warmer with the sweetness of the melted apple flesh against the juicy sultanas and a hint of warming cinnamon or all spice. So easy to do in the oven or now the microwave.

Cauliflower

Veggies

Piccalilli from Nip it in the Bud
I saw this recipe being made by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall on the Channel 4 program Everyday Food. It looks so easy to make, I’ll definitely be trying it for christmas.

There’s still time to watch Everyday Food (Vegetables episode) here: Channel 4 OD catchup.

Autumn Warmers

Curried Apple and Carrot Chutney by Nip It In The Bud
An alternative chutney for the winter months with the curried apple element. This chutney is certainly not for the faint hearted with ingredients like horseradish, ground ginger, curry powder, mustard seeds. It would make a perfect accompaniment to pork, ham or lamb that needs to be spiced up for dinner. Its also good to make as a gift for christmas.

Apples

Apples

Vegetable Patch Stew by Nigel Slater
This recipe uses up all leftover vegetables and ones from your stored harvests including courgettes, peppers, onions, garlic and thyme cooked together with tomatoes and passata (puree’d tomatoes). It is a versatile dish which you could add any vegetables you have in your cupboards. Very hearty and warming dish, perfect for sharing with a plate of bonfire burgers.

Tracey’s Carrot Soup
A very easy to make soup with fresh carrots from your stores or vegetable garden. The real freshness of the carrots is brought out through the stock and milk to make a delicious autumn soup which would go lovely with a crusty roll or piece of buttered bread.

Vegetable Cake

Bunch of Carrots

Bunch of Carrots

Yummy Scrummy Carrot Cake by Mary Cadogan (BBC Good Food)
This is my favourite carrot cake, although not when I have to grate 6 – 8 carrots! (harvested carrot sizes were small this year). It is worth it as its really light, moist and not too sweet. I’ve made this for family who love the no butter ingredients (using sunflower oil instead), add a drizzling of icing for that special touch. This cake will not disappoint!

Halloween Specials

Roasted Pumpkin and Coriander Soup from Love Food Hate Waste
A very bright orange and tangy soup, perfect for using up the halloween leftovers of the carved out pumpkin. This soup packs quite a punch with chilli, garlic and black pepper and will without a doubt keep you warm on a frosty night.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin

Stuffed Butternut Squash by Nigel Slater
A classic recipe as an alternative for halloween or bonfire night, especially good for digging in with a group of friends or family. The ginger and cinnamon bring out the hint of christmas, cold weather and the warming taste of this simple dish.

Nigel Slater’s New Series of Simple Suppers starts Wednesday 3rd November BBC1 8.30pm with more hints and advice on how to turn your vegetable garden harvest into an edible delight.

I’m so behind with my blog reader so what a lovely surprise to see my recipes included in your post. I’ve run out of the Curried Apple and Carrot chutney and it’s top of my list for a remake. Those ingredients do sound hot don’t they but it’s got just the right amount of bite for spicing up a sandwich but softening the heat if accompanying an actual curry. I think the sweetness of the apples helps with that. It’s definitely one of my faves :o )
