Purple Sprouting Broccoli Surprise

Purple Sprouting Surprise sounds like a desert or something which is similar is ‘Tracey’s a fool’. The curly kale which I thought had survived the winter has actually turned out to be purple sprouting broccoli. At least there’s a lovely splash of purple colour in amongst the ‘kale’ leaves to brighten up the beds whilst I get sowing with my peas and mange tout.

But then it got me thinking I don’t remember actually sowing purple sprouting broccoli but as I’d removed the plant labels when I added the recent homemade compost there’s no way of knowing what I sowed.

Anyway feast your eyes on the wonder that is Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

A good laugh Tracey! I seem to re-learn about the need for labelling every year! Kale I have but the PSB is stubbornly refusing to sprout for me yet!!!

Hi, I’m new to this site, but am loving it! Really great to have first hand advice on just about everything you could want to grow. I did smile at you forgetting to label plants! I still do it even though I’ve been gardening for quite a while. Though not much in the way of Veg.

This year I’ve grown purple sprouting broccoli for the first time, it looks and tastes good. Have to admit the deep purple colour is a bit off putting at first. After short, steam cooking, we all agreed it was tasty and had a milder flavour than the normal broccoli. Thanks for your very informative advice and such a beautiful website.

The same thing has just happened to me. We ate what I thought were kale leaves last weekend and this week I have gone to pick more kale and found surprise surprise purple flowering broccoli which looks just like Traceys…..
or could it be purple flowering kale?
