1st Sunshine, 1st Harvest, 1st Seedlings
Posted on 10. Apr, 2011 by Tracey in Veg Plot
Today was a day of firsts. It has been the first time I could enjoy the sunshine at the weekend instead of grabbing a few minutes popping out for a sandwich at work.
The sunshine has been glorious and as I write this I’m sitting on my decking in a baseball cap to prevent my frown lines (from squinting in the sun), lapping up the sunshine in my camping chair (we got rid of our patio furniture last year and haven’t replaced it yet), waiting patiently for my diet lemonade ice lollies to set in the freezer.
Anyway back to the Vegetable Plot, my first harvest of the year was my black kale and purple sprouting broccoli which was delicious. The Purple Sprouting Broccoli was a total surprise but has given me delight in growing it as it pulled me out of the winter blues a few weeks back seeing its purple jewels appear from the leaves and the purple bobbles of promise of more sprouts to come.
Sadly once it hits boiling water, the purple colour is no more, but nothing beats the freshness and flavour of home grown vegetables. Once you taste it, it spurs you on all year to grow more of the same.
Another first are my seedlings, I sowed the following seeds 3 weeks ago:-
- Mange Tout – Carouby de Maussane and Ezeta’s Krombek Blauschokker
- Carrot – Nairobi F1
- Lettuce – Black Seeded Simpson
- Spring Onion – Paris Silverskin
- Spring Onion – Purplette
- Pea – Twinkle
The sprinters have been mange tout, peas and lettuce. I am still waiting with baited breath for the carrots and spring onions to appear but they do seem like they take forever.
In my experience, just pretend you have forgotten about them, then in a few weeks when your back is turned, they appear bold as brass and you’ll wonder why you ever doubted they weren’t going to grow.
