July Vegetable Plot Update with Peas and Giant Cabbages

July Vegetable Plot Update with Peas and Giant Cabbages

Posted on 10. Jul, 2011 by in Veg Plot

Over the past month my vegetable plot has produced quite a lot of vegetables including a glut of mange tout which I have already had to freeze for eating later.

My cabbages have succeeded my expectations this year by becoming giant spring cabbages. I’ve had to blanche and freeze the leaves for later in the year as I have had to harvest all 3 large spring cabbages in one go due to a bout of whitefly.

Recent Sowings Update:

  • KohlRabi – belong to the brassica family and the monster seedlings are growing well. Some have been eaten by slugs (i’m guessing) as the all the leaves have gone and I just have some stalks.
  • Baby Red Lettuce – Started sowings on 11th June now a month later and the seedlings are growing well, even though I sowed a red and green mix I have a definite dominance on red, which is good because (apparently) slugs don’t like red lettuce.
  • Pea – Jaguar variety is growing really well in my plot. However sadly my potted seeds died, I’m glad I sowed directly into my beds as now I’m (almost) guaranteed some late peas.
  • Pumpkin Munchkin – this is my risky planting, only 1 seed from 7 germinated and I’ve planted it out into my raised bed. Also I sowed it in June and last sowing date was May so we shall see if it survives.

Recent Harvests:

  • Mange ToutCarouby de Maussane with the giant pods taste lovely and because I lost track of picking them every day, some turned into fattened pea pods with mange tout peas. Which is great because you can pod them like normal peas and cook as peas (well I ate a few raw, delicious).
  • Radish – Pink Beauty, i am a true fan and recommended it last year as a thing of beauty, it has performed well this year although now bolted and flowered, so this crop is over.
  • Spring cabbage – Hispi is a delightful variety to grow and has a sweet cabbage taste. My cabbages had a tenderheart centre with larger leaves around the outside. A few whitefly issues towards the end, this is why I harvested them all at once and preserved the leaves by freezing.

  • Shallots – Golden Gourmet will be ready to harvest in August,
  • Runner Beans – Celebration now climbing up their bamboo canes,
  • French Beans in pots, curly beans appearing,
  • Spring Onions - Purplette fattening up nicely and poping up to the surface.
