Vegetables To Harvest in August

Posted on 27. Aug, 2011 by in Veg Plot

Its World Kitchen Garden Day tomorrow which is celebration of the positives of organic gardening and food production all over the world. It is also an opportunity to show people about home-grown and home-cooked foods so I’d like to share with you my haul of home grown organic vegetables harvested in August and links to other vegetable blogger’s harvests.

iGrowVeg’s August Harvest

Baby Carrots

Variety: These are a new variety called Nairobi F1 from MoreVeg.co.uk.
Performance: A bit slow growing this year (possible cause the weather i.e. not enough rain in spring).
Would I Grow again? Yes for their lovely flavour.

French Beans

Variety: Speedy (Green variety) from MoreVeg.co.uk
Performance: Excellent, grow quickly, great taste when steamed.
Would I Grow again? Yes, they grew really well.

Variety: Minidor (Yellow variety) from RealSeeds.co.uk
Performance: Excellent, reliable, great flavour and heavy cropping plants. I love this variety and have grown it for 2 years now.
Would I Grow again? Yes, I would recommend this variety to everyone.

Climbing Beans

Bridgewater Climbing Beans

Bridgewater Climbing Beans

Variety: Bridgewater Climbing Bean from HSL Garden Organic
Performance: Excellent, heavy cropping and early mottled purple and green beans.
Would I Grow again? Yes although the variety is unavailable. Its the first time I have grown climbing beans alongside runner beans and I will do this again to gain an early crop from the climbing beans before the runner beans start cropping.

Shallots

Variety: Golden Gourmet from SimplySeeds.co.uk
Performance: Hardly any rotten bulbs, produced lots of small bulbs but the flavour packs a punch.
Would I Grow again? Yes, easy to grow and flavoursome bulbs.

Potatoes

Marfona Potatoes

Marfona Potatoes

Variety: Marfona (Jacket and Roast Maincrop variety) from SimplySeeds.co.uk
Performance: So far so good, I have harvested a few roast sized potatoes, so I’m hoping for larger sized potatoes in September. Taste and cook really well as wedges.
Would I Grow again? Yes, although some of the potatoes already have a small dose of scab, once the potato is peeled or scrubbed well, this is gone.
