Look at this earthworm, it may be slimy, long and good for the soil however it has revealed one of its hidden secrets to scientists this week.

Scientists from Georg-August-University Göttingen in Germany have discovered that earthworms are in fact predators of living as well as dead plants. Their particular favourites are legume seeds and seedlings as they have high levels of nitrogen so if your bean seedlings don’t germinate in the ground, earthworms can now be added to the list of culprits.

Previous studies have also shown earthworms eat seeds and take them to their burrows. Earthworms seek out seedlings that germinate slowly and are nitrogen rich and ingest them which slowly kills the plant leaving them susceptible to other pest and disease attacks.

The advantages of this new discovery is that farmers can attract earthworms to their soil by sowing certain seeds and the disadvantage is in some locations earthworms could destroy plant life.

Do you remember doing science experiments at school like the coin being cleaned when dropped in a beaker of coke or making a balloon rocket and firing it over the sports field? Even as adults we still have an inquisitive nature to discover the unknown.

We all like trying to conquer new things in our vegetable gardens each year. Last year I discovered whether I could grow vegetables on my office windowsill and I decided to record the contents of my compost bin for 3 months (a particular mad idea, I thought!)

Well its good news, I’m not alone. I’ve found some great bloggers that could pass for mad scientists and I’d like to share their experiments with you in weekly bite sized posts. This week, as its time to sow our french and runner beans in pots or modules I’d like to introduce to you to our first of many Vegetable Mad Scientists and an invaluable experiment that I for one would like to know the answer to and I’m sure you will too.

Mals Allotment Beans

Mals Allotment

Profile:
A weekend gardener and allotment holder for 15 years from Edinburgh, UK with a recent post on
‘Its not Rocket Science.. hopefully its Bean Science’.

Experiment Question: Which way up do you sow your bean seeds?

The Science Bit – Bean Germination:
When the bean seeds are sowed into soil and come into contact with water, the seed germinates by allowing the water into the microphyle (a small hole in the side of the seed). The seed case swells and the first root or radicle will grow out through the microphyle hole downwards into the soil. Once the root is secure in the soil, the plumule (the stem and first pair of leaves) will grow out of the hole in the seed case and move upwards towards the soil surface.

Germination of Beans

Research:
As you can see from various sources below, some people believe beans can be sowed any way up and others believe different and many of us (including me) don’t really know which way up to sow beans.

Yahoo Questions

Allotments-UK Forum

Garden Banter.co.uk Forum

The Method:
A controlled experiment with 44 pots, sowing 2 beans in each, carefully labelled with the variety and orientation (which way up) the seed has been planted. The orientation options are: up, down, sideways flat, sideways vertical.

Measurements:
To record the germination speed and length of time it takes the seedlings reach 6 inches tall and to record in which orientation they were sown.

Interview Questions:

Where did you get the idea from to do this experiment?

Mal’s Answer:
Googling failed to come up with any answer to the question I set in my previous blog entry. No comments posted suggested a source I had overlooked. Several web posters claimed that there is no right way up to sow beans. I wondered if they had tested this.

Which way up have you sown bean seeds in the past?

Mal’s Answer:
I’ve always just poked beans into compost/soil randomly.

Will you be doing any more experiments in the future?

Mal’s Answer:
Yes! Every year is another experiment, but blogging has forced me to become better about recording things and actually following through my intentions. The camera is a great asset when it comes to recod keeping. I even use it to retain information on the back of seed packets. In the past I’ve forgotten what I did and when. My practices (and my yields) have improved no end since I have posted my efforts in public where others can scrutinise them, and I too can refer back to what I did and what I hypothesised would happen.

Mals Allotment Bean Experiment

This year in my garden I’m trying to squeeze in vegetables where-ever I can and as we are concentrating on painting and cleaning up our decking area, this is a ripe sunny area which is going to be great for large pots and planters.

As soon as the BBC’s Dig In Campaign popped up on Gardeners World this year, I was there on their website applying for my free seeds (as last year I missed out) and this year I was lucky enough to have the seed envelope land on my doormat.

BBC Dig In Campaign Seeds

This year the vegetable varieties are:

French Bean – Blue Lake,

Courgette – Black Beauty,

Carrot – Red Chantenay Red,

Salad – Mixed Leaves,

Basil – Sweet Genovese.

The envelope contains 5 vegetable and herb seed packets, a small leaflet on how to grow your own grub and a sticket sheet.

I think these herb and vegetables are perfect for growing in containers, so that exactly how I’m going to grow them on my sunny deck.

Growing Courgettes
I’m particularly excited about the Courgette – Black Beauty as I nearly bought this variety last year to put in my pots and I’ve also never tasted home grown courgettes.

I’ll be re-visiting my Dig In Vegetables and their progress through out the Summer. Hopefully I’ll be trying to find some lovely recipes to cook my black beauty courgettes in August. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, if anyones got any tips on growing Courgettes, please leave a comment below, they will be gratefully received!

Introducing the Pineberry which looks like an albino version of a strawberry but with red seeds. If that isn’t confusing enough it actually tastes of pineapple!

Pineberries are on sale in 45 Waitrose stores around the country for the next five weeks whilst they are in season. They originate from South America although now are growing in Holland in giant commercial glasshouses.

Pineberry

Pineberries have over the years been commercially bred from the strawberries we know today as alpine strawberries.

White Alpine Strawberries have existed in the wild since the roman times and can be grown from seed. They tolerate the shade and prefer a slightly acidic soil to grow in and as they are wild strawberries they are ever-bearers. Also quite handy if the birds in your garden usually peck your normal strawberries to pieces, these white ones look as if they aren’t ripe so they will leave them alone!

White Alpine Strawberries can be sown from January to March, so if your quick try sowing some this weekend!

Seeds are available from the following online seed suppliers:-

Yesterday I went Blackberry picking for the first time ever and sacrificed myself to the brambles. Its amazing to think that there are hundreds and thousands of blackberry brambles on wasteland and only by word of mouth or local knowledge that they are ever found and picked. Its like a secret cult that you have to join to get insider knowledge of where the blackberries are located.

Then of course, that’s only the beginning once you’ve found the blackberry bushes,

Do you:
a) Stick to the slim pickings on the path,
b) Pull back the inner brambles to reveal the ones people cannot reach for, or
c) Venture forth into the undergrowth to find an area where no-one has been before.

Its c) of course – Venture forth and cut thyself on the undergrowth, try and avoid getting a twisted ankle in rabbit holes, get an allergic reaction to a few stinging nettles and that’s before I even got to the blackberries.

Its then like a mission out of the krypton factor to get into the brambles and pull off the fat juicy ripe ones without ripping your hands and ankles to shreds on the bramble prickles or having a little shop of horrors moment when the bramble reaches out and grips your clothing and refuses to let you go!

On a more positive note, the best thing about wild blackberries is the sweet melt in the mouth taste and of course its all free food. So here is my beautiful blackberry bounty.

Blackberry Bounty

Needless to say it was well worth all the pain in the end.

The rat catching lime green pitcher plant has been named after Sir David Attenborough. It is called ‘Nepenthes attenboroughii’. (Photo courtesy of WikiMedia Commons)

Carnivorous Plants
A carnivorous plant is one that must attract, kill and destroy the prey by digestion.

4 Ways Carnivorous Plants catch their prey

Snap closing strong leaves like The Venus Fly Trap. Once the prey walks over or near the hairs, this is the trigger for the trap to close.

Bladder traps, these plants suck the prey in which get stuck in a vacuum.

Pitcher plants lure the prey in with promise of nectar, the prey falls in unable to escape from the acidic liquid. Sarracenia is the most popular as it is very hardy.

Fly Paper glue. These plants use sticky glue to hold their prey once they have caught it.
