Good advice about windowsill growing.
I have cats in the house that will chew on anything green! So I plan to plant outside and cover when temperatures are too cold.
I think the 52 Week Salad Challenge is going to be a lot of fun!

I don't tend to use recipe books much, looking up recipes online as and when needed instead, but I do love the River Cottage books, and the Veg one for me is a welcome extension of the general RC schtick (if you can extend a schtick...?!). HFW's ethos seems to be 'growing stuff, making good food out of it and eating it is fun and improves life in general' which as far as I'm concerned can't be argued with. And I discovered that Carrot Cake Recipe a few weeks back. Done it twice now. It is fabulous!!

Hi Tracey,
I have been reading your blog for a while now (banking the tips for when I get my vegetable plot up and running again) so I am nominating you for a blog award. It is a bit of fun really....

To ease the pain of not being able to plant outside, I've been growing lots of pea shoots in containers on my south-facing window. The pea shoots are ready for harvesting in 3 weeks or less! They're great as salads and in sandwiches, but my favorite is sauteed with garlic and soy sauce. You can buy dried peas in the grocery store (as long as they're not split peas) or order them from a sprouts store.

I am a first time allotment grower and popped some elephant garlic in early December - no sign of it yet and soem sprint at new year - this is already 4" tall as we have had a mild spell but it still seems unbleievale to me that something can grow so fast at this time of year.

I've definitely been plotting what I can sow now, despite having winter veg growing! I've fallen for the leggy windowsill earlies before and am thinking of starting seeds on my balcony, close to the wall and under cut down water bottle cloches. All this, you understand, on the basis that if it all goes wrong I still have time to start again!!

Hi Tracey - thanks for the link love :)

It's been great to get growing in January instead of the usual wallowing in catalogues and dreaming of how the plot will be this year.

This is a useful summary of the potential pitfalls of growing on windowsills can bring and what to do about it!

Hi Alex,

Thanks for stopping by at my blog. Windowsills to chit potatoes on should not be too cold or frosty otherwise those little white growing tips may turn black. More info here: Potato Chitting Problems

As for the broad beans, I do tend to stake them when they have reached 6 to 12 inches high, which is around now, just to keep them off the wet soil. I'll loosely tie them to a stake as they are not upright at the mo. I have in the past also used stakes at either end of the rows and used twine to tie to each stake doing a sort of boundary to keep them upright in high wind. I don't stake at the beginning as I'm not sure which way they might grow up out for the ground.

Happy Growing!
Best Wishes
Tracey

Hi Tracey, I came to your site looking for an idea of which windowsill to chit potatoes on, and found this really useful post too! I've also got overwintering Broad Beans (Aquadulce) and Peas (Alderman) started in October, and they're looking good so far. They are in Gro-beds (about 9in deep compost) because I have almost as much hard surface as 'real' garden and can't do much about that.

From your photos you don't see to have staked or tied them - is that intentional? I haven't either but I was about to, given all this howling weather we've been having. Would that be treating them too soft and I should let them tough it out?!? Thanks!
