Sowing Instructions:
- Use a trowel to make a small flat bottom trench about 5cm deep,
- Water the bottom of the trench,
- Put the seeds a couple of inches apart in the trench and cover over with soil,
- Water well and label the row,
- If sowing another row make sure it is approx 5cm from the first trench,
- Staking with canes, willow or pea sticks will be required as they grow to 2 metres high.
Mange Tout can also be grown in a pot or container.
Seeds can be pushed into the compost approx 5cm deep and approx 1-2 inches apart and have some canes or an obelisk ready to support the plants.
Harvesting Mange Tout
- Pull the flat pods off the plant sharply when they have reached 1 to 2 inches in length.
- Mange tout tend to turn into mange pea pods if not continually harvested over a period of days, it doesn’t matter if they turn into pea pods they can still be harvested and eaten.
- When the flat pods or pea pods become leathery to the touch and very light green almost translucent in colour, this is the end of their season. It is worth checking the plants over for the last crop to harvest before pulling the stems out of the ground. The stems can be placed on the compost heap.
