Growing Spring Onions
Spring Onions are part of the allium genus and have a milder flavour than normal onions. They are usually used in stirfrys, salads or steamed. They can be grown in pots, troughs or raised beds.
Sow: February – July.
Harvest: June to October.
Varieties:
White Lisbon, North Holland Blood Red, Paris Silverskin, Purplette.
What growing conditions do Spring Onions like?: They require a light and sunny position.
Where to Sow: They do not like disturbance so are best sown directly into your raised bed or plot.
How To Sow Spring Onions
Instructions:
- Refer to your own seed packet or take these instructions as a guide only.
- With your trowel or dibber, draw a row or line in the raised bed soil that is no more than 1.5cm, or half inch deep.
- Sow thinly so they have enough room to establish.
- Then keep moist.
- Thin if necessary to 1.5cm apart and water well until established.
Approx No of Weeks til Harvest: 15 – 19 weeks.

Tiny Seeds and Thinning
Spring Onions have very tiny black seeds which are hard to sow thinly into rows. The seedlings can be thinned when established to 1 inch apart.

Successional Sowings
Sow a row or two every two weeks to keep your supply of spring onions going throughout the year. Some varieties can be sown July to August for cropping throughout the autumn and winter.
