Peas are a great garden treat and are easy to grow. There are two types of peas, wrinkled types can be sown from March onwards and rounded seeds can be grown in the autumn as they are very hardy.

Autumn Sowing Peas:
Type: Rounded Seed
Sow Seeds: October to November
Harvest: From Late May.

Spring Sowing Seeds:
Type: Wrinkled Seed
Sow Seeds: March to June
Harvest: July to September

How to Sow Autumn / Overwintering Peas

You will need:

  • A Raised bed, large pot, plot or allotment bed,
  • Autumn planting onions sets/bulbs,
  • Gloves and a trowel,
  • Small bamboo canes or branches (approx 40cm long),
  • Watering Can,
  • Plant Labels.

Instructions:

  1. Refer to your own seed packet or take these instructions as a guide only.
  2. Prepare the bed by breaking up any soil clumps, add compost if necessary and raking level,
  3. Using a trowel or a cane mark lines or rows in the soil where the beans will be planted,
  4. Water the rows and let the water soak into the soil,
  5. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep in the soil,
  6. Cover the seeds with soil,
  7. Mark the ends of the rows with plant labels,
  8. Water well and (optional depending on location) cover with a cloche or enviromesh.
  9. Peas will grow to between 40 to 60cm high and will need staking with bamboo canes or similar.
