Introducing the Inside Out Strawberry – The Pineberry
Posted on 30. Mar, 2010 by Tracey in Veg Plot
Introducing the Pineberry which looks like an albino version of a strawberry but with red seeds. If that isn’t confusing enough it actually tastes of pineapple!
Pineberries are on sale in 45 Waitrose stores around the country for the next five weeks whilst they are in season. They originate from South America although now are growing in Holland in giant commercial glasshouses.
Pineberries have over the years been commercially bred from the strawberries we know today as alpine strawberries.
White Alpine Strawberries have existed in the wild since the roman times and can be grown from seed. They tolerate the shade and prefer a slightly acidic soil to grow in and as they are wild strawberries they are ever-bearers. Also quite handy if the birds in your garden usually peck your normal strawberries to pieces, these white ones look as if they aren’t ripe so they will leave them alone!
White Alpine Strawberries can be sown from January to March, so if your quick try sowing some this weekend!

This must be an April Fool’s right, probably a PR stunt at the same time, there is an internet marketing company named “pineberry” as it happens.

A little too early, this should have been ‘leaked’ tomorrow …… April 1st or all fools day.

Is there a place I can order these and have them delivered to Texas, USA?

When I researched the Pineberry before writing this news piece, I did see the PR company called Pineberry and different pineberry in nature described as pink berries.
But as Waitrose have now released their press release on their website as follows: Pineberries at Waitrose, and give the name of the supplier VitalBerry, I think that pretty much sums it up, that the Pineberry is the next Strasberry (cross between Raspberry and Strawberry) at Waitrose!
A few more news sources on The Pineberry include: Wikipedia who speculate that it could be an April’s Fool and comments from The Guardian.

I am now getting runners off them and have a queue of friends and family wanting plants.

An update to my previous post, the pineberry has produced some flowers, but no fruit. The petals on the flowers dropped off and the fruit never really started to develop before shrivelling up. I have put pics and updates on the site mentioned. I am really disappointed!
